Please follow instructions below to set up our web-based communication for the year, including grading, scheduling, writing and more. It's imperative that you do this immediately.
STEP 1: Access your BHS Google account: All BHS students now have a Google Account at psbma.org. Your email address is:
Two digit year of graduation + last name + first initial + @psbma.org
Example: 16 + grande + r @ psbma.org = email@example.com
Please record your password in a good place. By the way, you can have all Gmail messages forwarded to a current email address that you use (Instructions are here).
STEP 2: Google Drive: When you are logged in to your psbma (Google) account, go to Drive, where you'll keep folders and documents--and all of your work for this class.
Under “Drive” (left side of screen), click "NEW" and select "Folder.”
Name it "First name + Last name + block + world" (Example: "Jonah Hanson A World"). See example image below.
Click it, then select "NEW again to make a subfolders inside your main folder. You'll do this 12 times, creating a subfolder for each of the 10 units of this class plus 2 others. Use the image below, or see the syllabus.
Name each folder "UNIT NUMBER UNIT TITLE." For example: "01 FRENCH REVOLUTION" is the first unit folder. "02 INDUSTRIALIZATION" is the second folder, etc.
Add two more folders, "ADMIN" and "RESEARCH AND WRITING" (12 total folders). See the image below--it should look exactly like that.
Share your folders with Mr. Grande so I can read your work: Click on your folder at the top of the screen (to the right of "My Drive") and select "Share." Please add: firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure it says “can edit” to the right.
STEP 3: Canvas and homework: You will create all of your assignments as a Google Doc, leave them in your psbma "Google" Drive, but then submit them on Canvas for credit. It’s actually very easy--and I won't accept homework any other way! Go to Canvas and login:
New Login: Two digit year of graduation + last name + first initial + @psbma.org. If Mr. Grande were graduating this spring my login/email would be "email@example.com"
Password: IF YOU USED CANVAS LAST YEAR: Use the same password as last year. IF YOU ARE A NEW CANVAS USER: Initial Password: psb + student id. Now, change your password. You can find your Student ID [called LASID] on: Official school documents, Report cards, Your student ID card, andthe X2 portal.
Click on “Settings” in the upper right-hand corner. On the right side of the page, add your email so that you get emails from your teacher.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT search Google for "CANVAS"--this will lead you to the wrong site. You need to use "brookline.instructure.com"
IMPORTANT: Go to your World History course. Click Settings, then Profile. Below you’ll see “registered services;” to the right, click “Google Docs.” Follow instructions that allow Canvas to access your Google Docs. BE SURE TO USE YOUR PSBMA.ORG ACCOUNT.
STEP 4: Before you submit your first assignment, you'll need to learn the system for this class. Go to Posting an Assignment.
STEP 5: Submit a Sample assignment. You are now ready to complete your first assignment. Go to the syllabus at Unit 1, The French Revolution, on our course webpage and complete "Sample Canvas assignment." Then submit it as a practice assignment.
STEP 6: Class website: Spend time on thid website: Check out the homepage, then go to Unit 1 Syllabus and get familiar with it.
