The past is what happened. History is what we choose to remember, and resolve to forget (Roger Grande)
a sequence of lessons on historical understanding
When we study history, we practice freedom.
Historical inquiry demands that we use free inquiry and reason. It requires us to have unimpaired access to facts, It exhorts us to tell uncomfortable truths and to peel the insulation from powerful forces and people that protects them from scrutiny. When these acts are restricted, we are not entirely free. Producing and learning history is a truth telling exercise that ultimately leads us to better understand ourselves so that we can make informed choices.
Please see the Great quotes about history page for more insight into the practice of history. Also, "Thoughts on the production and study of history."
